I was at an interesting workshop at The Edge yesterday, playing with a 3D printer at additive desktop manufacturing! (using a hybrid model based on the RepRap designs). The end result being a small walking robot.
Overall I was impressed with results of the the print (and the delivery by the blokes doing the workshop)- I kind of liked the roughness of the final print (a missing component of the bot) and it was good to see the extrusion head in action. I want to be more involved in the printing process and liked the home brew approach which would allow me to get even more involved in the medium - and experiment more with the end results. The RepRap printer fits in with my goal to merge my digital and physical practices into a complimentary hybrid workflow (as well as allowing me to engage in the peculiar quirks of the RepRap outputs and processes).
They are planing a similar event where one builds one own RepRap machine using the same processes (this course was a taster for a four day workshop), looking forward to it.
Occasional updates from me.
